Sustainable Flooring Products Store

1. What is a sustainable flooring products store?

Slightly less ambitious than a green building retail store, a sustainable flooring products store carries only flooring products such as bamboo, cork and other easily renewable wood floors, FSC certified hardwoods, Marmoleum, Forbo, and reclaimed woods, as well as all the healthy accessories, like eco-friendly sealants and finishes, that would go along with them.  These may not be the cheapest products but they can add beauty, value, and durability, when installed in a properly.  Plus, products like  cork flooring originate from trees which must be kept alive year after year, rather than cut down.

For an idea of the growth of green building trends, see the previous entry on the green building retail store.

2. What required knowledge or skills are necessary?

It would be very beneficial to have worked in flooring (installation, remodeling, new construction, etc.) prior to beginning this business, as you’ll need to be able to communicate well with the end customers as well as contractors about installation, maintenance and value.   Especially with contractors, because installation of these products is likely somewhat different from what they’re used to, you may have to address some of their skepticism.

3. How much money is required to start?

$$$   (on a scale of $ to $$$$$)

4. What is the income potential?

$$$$-$$$$$   (on a scale of $ to $$$$$)

5. What is the best location for a sustainable flooring products store?

Urban (fair), semi-urban (very good), suburbs (very good), rural (poor).  Like the green building retail store, you probably want a retail location near other building supply stores, so that contractors don’t have to go out-of-the-way to buy your products and customers can shop multiple stores (including yours) in one trip.

6.  Three best questions to ask yourself to find out if this business is right for you (if you can answer yes to all three, this business might be for you):

Do you know floors?
Are you familiar with LEED standards, or better yet, LEED certified?
Do you have a knack for interior design so that you can not only build a beautiful showroom but also so that you can give dynamite advice to customers?
